Setting : Komaran Society : House Bellatrix

The Bellatrix are extremely devoted to the Church of Light, and frequently become priests. Their leader Augustin died at the end of the Interregnum. They remain powerful because of their Church ties, but are considered to be on the decline after Crown Prince Alessandro's restoration to the throne.

If orthodoxy is the primary trait of the Bellatrix family, common sense is a close second. Throughout their brief tenure as one of the most powerful families in Komaru, the Bellatrix as a whole have done their best to act with honor and integrity in their dealings with the other nobles of Komaru. For two centuries, the family's honor was sufficient to earn it a place alongside the other Great Families.

Although the Bellatrix family's ties to the Church are strong, they were once much stronger. Originally, the Bellatrix functioned as the strong arm behind the Church's policies. With the creation of the Church Illuminators, a private army directly under the Church's control, the Bellatrix suddenly gained a degree of forced independence. In the decades since, the Church and the Bellatrix have largely operated in parallel rather than in unison. Nevertheless, no one was surprised when the Principal Light of the Church of Inner Light turned to the Bellatrix at the start of the Interregnum. Valentin Komaru's execution left the kingdom without a leader, and it was obvious that the Church could only trust the Bellatrix in Valentin's place.

When the Church offered him the Crown, Augustin Bellatrix only accepted the title of Lord Protector. As a ruler, Augustin Bellatrix displayed the expected Bellatrix moderation, and managed to keep the kingdom's peace until Alessandro Komaru declared himself. Even then, Augustin did his best to avoid escalating his conflict with Alessandro, until at last he died at Shiro Bridge.

The defeat at Shiro Bridge seems to have initiated a slow transformation within the Bellatrix. Although they accept Alessandro's reign, many younger Bellatrix have expressed bitterness over the reverses the family has suffered. While calmer heads prevail for now, many nobles wonder what would happen if the Bellatrix were to attempt a second Interregnum.

As a young family, the Bellatrix favor names with a French or European feel, rather than the more traditional Japanese names favored by elders of other families. House Bellatrix's colors are white and red.
