The merchant class thrives upon the presence of cities, and suffered during the years of the Church's power. The Twilight Crux was born when a number of merchants, led by the charismatic Lucien d'Aramis, decided to cooperate and focus their efforts on investigating the secrets of the past. Delving into black arts and pre-Paraceln lore, they discovered the keys to stabilizing the now-legendary guns that Alessandro Komaru used to crush Augustin Bellatrix's army at Shiro Bridge. Since the end of the war, the Twilight Crux, and particularly their guns, have been the darlings of noble society. Every noble aspires to have their own Twilight Crux initiate, and the merchants grow wealthy on the noble patronage.
The Church despises the Twilight Crux, but is too cautious to face the anger of their guns so soon after the end of the Interregnum. Meanwhile, the merchants fed by the Crux's search for ancient secrets grow ever more powerful. Some are even said to dream of holding noble titles of their own.
